Poet-Charles Simic
This is what happened to me. This is what I saw and felt. This phrase was used by Charles Simic. I like this particular poet because of his ability to learn so fast. He did not speak English until 15 and he published his first poem in 1959 when he was 21. Thus, he had only 6 six to master English and publish his first poem.
Charles Simic had a traumatic childhood and he he emigrated from Yugoslavia with his mother and brother to join his father in the United States. After publishing his first poem, he composed more poems and published them like:That Little Something (Harcourt, 2008), My Noiseless Entourage (2005); Late and New Poems (2003); Night Picnic (2001); The Book of Gods and Devils (2000); and Jackstraws (1999). Charles also published numerous translations of French, Serbian, Croatian, Macedonian, and Slovenian poetry, and is the author of several books of essays, including Orphan Factory.
Simic was appointed the fifteenth Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry in 2007. Charles, was extremely touched.
Charles is a poet who is a good example to other poets as to never give up and continue learning no matter how difficult the situation is.
